Traxxas has built plenty of big RC machines before, but the Pro Scale Funco Sand Car is something else entirely. It’s modeled after the insane full-size Funco rails that tear across the dunes with 1000-horsepower engines, and somehow they’ve managed to squeeze that wild energy into a 1/6 scale RC. It’s big, loud (for an electric), and turns heads the second you pull it out of the box.

If you’ve ever been to Glamis or watched dune videos online, you’ve probably seen a Funco sand car. They’re tube-framed monsters with long-travel suspension, whip lights waving in the wind, and paddle tires that make rooster tails of sand taller than a person. Traxxas licensed the design, so what you get here isn’t just “inspired by”—it’s a proper scale replica.

Make no mistake: this thing is huge. At 32 inches long and nearly 22 wide, it sits in the same parking spot as an X-Maxx or XRT. But the shape is lower and sleeker, with that desert buggy vibe. You get a detailed cockpit, driver figures, and color-matched whip lights that look fantastic blasting across a dune at sunset.

Power comes from the familiar Velineon 1200XL motor and VXL-8s ESC. Yes, it’s the same combo that makes the XRT and X-Maxx ridiculous—but here it’s pushing a two-wheel drive setup. The chassis is all new, though you can see some DNA carried over from the X-Series. Battery trays are dual-compartment, locking, and sized to fit packs up to 186 × 51 × 44 mm. That means big 4S packs slide in without drama.
On the sand, it feels right at home. Stab the throttle and the rear paddles dig deep, throwing a cloud behind you while the front arrows keep it tracking straight. On grass and even tarmac, it’s surprisingly well behaved for a 2WD car. It doesn’t spin out every time you breathe on the trigger like you might expect.
Now, about those front disc brakes. They look cool and feel scale, but fine sand can work its way into the rotors and cause them to bind. Some owners just yank them off, others adjust them as Traxxas suggests. It’s one of those features you’ll either brag about or quietly remove after the first dune trip.
Traxxas ships it ready for dual 4S LiPo batteries. That’s how you hit the advertised 55+ mph. If you stick with the stock 6700mAh packs, it’ll run fine—but many bashers upgrade to CNHL packs for more punch and longer runs. Based on tray size, here are three setups that make sense:
One thing to note: Traxxas uses their High-Current plugs, while CNHL ships EC5. You’ll need an EC5-to-TRX adapter or a clean solder swap. Once that’s handled, you’re unlocking the full potential of this beast. Check out our full battery lineup here: Best LiPo Batteries for the Traxxas Funco Sand Car.
Think of the lineup like this: the X-Maxx is your monster truck basher, the UDR is your desert trophy truck, and the Funco Sand Car is your dune rail. Different flavors, different personalities. The Sand Car isn’t trying to backflip at a skate park (though it can survive some hits). It’s about blasting across loose terrain, long slides, and that scale-realism vibe you don’t get from the others.
The Traxxas Pro Scale Funco Sand Car is bold, expensive, and a little polarizing—but it’s also one of the most fun releases in years. If you’ve got access to sand or wide open dirt, it feels alive in a way that few RCs do. Yes, the brakes might bug you, and yes, it needs dual 4S packs, but when it’s on song, you’ll forget about all that. This isn’t just another big RC—it’s a different driving experience altogether.
Q: Will the front disc brakes jam in sand?

A: Coarse or wet sand can clog the vented rotors and cause binding. Two common fixes: (1) loosen the calipers as Traxxas suggests for sand running, or (2) remove the front discs and rely on the electronic rear brake—many drivers and reviewers report this works fine.
Q: Why is it called a sand car if sand is so tough on it?
A: It can absolutely run in sand, but sand is a high-wear environment. After each session, blow out or clean the brakes and bearings; wet or salty beach sand in particular will jam components more quickly.
Q: Can I use non-Traxxas batteries?
A: Physically yes—EC5/IC5 connectors fit (watch for center pins or ID pins). The best setups are dual 4S packs in the 5200–9500mAh range, depending on whether you want lighter weight or maximum runtime.
Q: How does it compare to other Traxxas models like the X-Series, Desert Racer, or a Desert Buggy?
A: Think of it this way: the X-Maxx and XRT (X-Series) are monster trucks, the Unlimited Desert Racer is built like a trophy truck, and a classic Desert Buggy is a lightweight racer. The Funco Sand Car sits somewhere in between—larger than a buggy, more scale-authentic than the UDR, and with its own unique 2WD dune-rail personality.
Q: Can I run one 8S battery instead of two 4S?
A: No, it’s built for dual 4S packs in series.
Q: Will it run on 6S?
A: It’ll move, but you won’t get the performance Traxxas built it for.
Q: Does it survive hard bashing?
A: Yes. People have launched it off ramps and only broken minor parts like shock ends.
Q: Is it only for sand?
A: Sand is its natural playground, but it also runs fine on grass, dirt, and pavement.
