What Is an AC LiPo Battery Charger?

An AC LiPo battery charger is an RC battery charger that can take power from an AC mains outlet without requiring the user to provide a separate high-current DC power supply. Depending on the charger design, the AC power supply may be built into the charger enclosure or supplied as a detachable module.

For many RC users, this is the simplest charging arrangement for a home workbench, garage, workshop or race pit. Connect the charger to the correct regional mains supply, connect the battery and balance lead as required, select the correct battery program and charging parameters, and the charger handles the AC-to-DC power conversion internally.

Who Should Choose an AC RC Battery Charger?

An AC-powered RC charger makes particular sense when convenience is more important than building a separate charging power system.

  • Home RC charging: plug directly into an available mains outlet without a separate DC power supply.
  • RC car racers: useful where AC power is available at a pit table or workshop.
  • Airplane and helicopter pilots: convenient for preparing flight batteries before heading to the field.
  • Users with several battery sizes: programmable AC chargers can support a wide range of cell counts and charging currents.
  • Anyone who wants a cleaner charging station: fewer external power components can make the workbench easier to organize.

AC Charger vs DC Charger: What Is the Difference?

The main difference is the charger's input power source. An AC charger can use household or workshop mains power directly. A DC charger requires a compatible external DC source such as a bench power supply or another suitable DC power system.

Neither input type is automatically better. The right choice depends on where you charge, the size of your batteries and how much charging power you actually need.

AC Charger vs AC/DC Charger

An important distinction is that AC charger describes the ability to operate from AC mains power, while AC/DC charger means the charger can accept both AC and DC input.

That means an AC/DC model can correctly appear in this AC charger collection because it can operate directly from AC power. It also belongs to the narrower AC/DC category because it provides a second DC input option.

Important: AC and DC power ratings may be different on the same charger. Do not assume that a charger's maximum advertised wattage is available when it is connected to AC mains.

One of the most important specifications on an AC RC battery charger is its maximum charging wattage in AC mode. Current alone does not tell the complete story because charging a higher-voltage battery requires more power.

A useful approximation is:

Charging Power ≈ Battery Charging Voltage × Charging Current

For example, a 6S LiPo approaches approximately 25.2V near full charge. Charging at 5A therefore requires roughly 126W before allowing for conversion losses and charger overhead. A 50W AC charger cannot maintain 5A throughout that charging session simply because its current menu may allow a higher setting.

This is why users charging large 4S, 6S or 8S RC batteries should compare AC wattage as carefully as maximum current.

AC-capable chargers can vary considerably in output, cell-count range and number of channels. The following examples show why it is important to compare the specification that applies specifically to AC operation.

Specifications refer to the charger's stated maximum capability. Actual charging power and current depend on the connected battery, selected program, input conditions, battery charge-rate limit and how available power is allocated between channels.

Single-Channel or Dual-Channel AC Charger?

A single-channel charger handles one main battery charging task at a time. This can be completely adequate for users with a small number of packs or lower daily charging volume.

A dual-channel AC charger can manage two supported battery tasks during the same charging session. That is particularly useful for RC pilots and drivers who regularly prepare pairs of batteries, several flight packs or multiple race packs.

However, check whether the stated AC wattage is per channel or total shared power. A charger having two 20A-capable channels does not automatically mean both channels can simultaneously deliver 20A when running from its internal AC power supply.

Choose an AC Charger by Battery Cell Count

Always confirm that the charger supports the battery's complete series cell count. A charger rated for up to 6S standard LiPo can handle supported 2S, 3S, 4S, 5S and 6S packs, but it cannot be assumed to charge an 8S pack.

  • 2S / 7.4V LiPo: common in RC cars, crawlers and smaller platforms.
  • 3S / 11.1V LiPo: widely used in RC cars, airplanes and FPV.
  • 4S / 14.8V LiPo: common in faster RC cars, aircraft, boats and multirotors.
  • 6S / 22.2V LiPo: widely used in EDF aircraft, helicopters, performance RC cars and FPV.
  • 8S / 29.6V LiPo: requires a charger specifically rated for 8S standard LiPo operation.

Cell-count support and charging power are separate specifications. A charger may technically support a high cell count while still charging a large-capacity pack relatively slowly when used at a lower AC wattage.

AC Chargers for RC Cars, Airplanes, Helicopters and FPV

The vehicle type does not determine the charger by itself. Battery chemistry, cell count, capacity, connector arrangement and permitted charge rate matter more than whether the pack is installed in a car, airplane or helicopter.

For smaller RC car and FPV batteries, moderate AC power may be enough. Large-capacity 6S and 8S airplane, helicopter, boat and basher batteries can benefit from substantially more available charging wattage, particularly when more than one battery needs to be prepared in the same session.

Check Battery Chemistry, Not Just Voltage

Modern hobby chargers may support LiPo, LiHV, LiFe, Li-ion, NiMH and other rechargeable battery types, but these chemistries use different charging programs and voltage limits.

Standard LiPo batteries must use the appropriate LiPo charging program and must not be charged above 4.20V per cell. LiHV batteries require a charger with a dedicated LiHV program when charging above standard LiPo voltage and must only be charged to a higher voltage when the battery itself is specifically designed for LiHV operation.

Do not assume that one charger's maximum supported cell count applies identically to every battery chemistry. Check the individual product specification for the chemistry you intend to charge.

Check the AC Plug for Your Region

An AC-powered charger also needs the correct mains connection for the destination where it will be used. Depending on the model and available version, AC chargers may be supplied with US, EU, UK or AU plug options.

Check the selected plug version before ordering. The plug type and the charger's supported AC input-voltage range are separate specifications, so both should match the intended charging location.

What is an AC LiPo charger?

An AC LiPo charger is a charger that can be powered directly from a compatible AC mains outlet. Its AC power supply is either integrated into the charger or supplied as part of the AC charging system.

Do I need a separate power supply for an AC RC battery charger?

Not for normal AC operation. The main advantage of an AC-capable charger is that the AC power-conversion stage is already part of the charging setup. An AC/DC charger may additionally accept an external DC source.

Is an AC/DC LiPo charger also an AC charger?
