The Hobbywing QUICRUN WP-10BL80 Crawler is a compact 80A electronic speed controller developed for 1/10 RC crawlers that need smooth low-speed control, strong hill-holding performance and flexible motor compatibility. It can operate a sensorless brushless motor or a brushed motor, allowing one ESC to support different crawler power-system directions.

A 2S–4S LiPo input range, selectable 6V/7.4V/8.4V switch-mode BEC, real-time AUX drag-brake adjustment and crawler-specific parameters give builders more control over low-speed throttle, climbing torque, braking response and steering-servo power. Its independent programming port also keeps setup convenient when using an LED Program Box or LCD Program Box Pro.

Important: select the correct Motor Type before running the vehicle. In brushed mode, connect the motor only to the ESC’s A and C outputs. Do not connect a brushed motor to terminal B. The IP67 protection is intended for normal splash, water and dust exposure; do not leave the ESC submerged for extended periods.

Core Description

The WP-10BL80 Crawler is not simply a general-purpose 80A ESC placed in a crawler chassis. Its programming menu includes functions that directly affect low-speed driving, hill holding, braking progression and throttle resolution.

Brushless users can tune FOC Power and Low Speed Throttle to change how much of the trigger range is devoted to precise low-speed operation. Brushed users can select the dedicated Brushed Motor mode and retain access to crawler-focused controls such as drag brake force, drag brake rate, punch, reverse force and motor rotation.

The ability to switch between brushed and brushless operation also makes the ESC useful for builders who want to retain an existing 540 or 555 brushed motor before later moving to a compatible sensorless brushless crawler system.

Compact Hobbywing WP-10BL80 Crawler 80A ESC with 2S to 4S LiPo support

Why Choose the QUICRUN WP-10BL80 Crawler?

Brushed and Brushless Support

Run a compatible brushed motor or a sensorless brushless crawler motor from one ESC platform.

Real-Time AUX Drag Brake

Adjust hill-holding force from the transmitter without stopping to reprogram the ESC.

2S–4S LiPo Capability

Supports a broad crawler voltage range for trail, technical and higher-voltage builds.

Selectable High-Voltage BEC

Choose 6V, 7.4V or 8.4V for compatible receivers, steering servos and accessories.

Compact Low-Profile Case

The 36 × 30 × 15.5mm case helps simplify installation in space-limited crawler chassis.

Independent Programming Port

Connect a compatible program box without removing the throttle lead from the receiver.

Real-Time Drag Brake Adjustment from the Transmitter

Drag brake is one of the most important crawler settings because it controls how strongly the vehicle holds when the throttle returns to neutral. A higher value can provide stronger hill holding, while a lower value allows the vehicle to roll more naturally on flowing trail sections.

The yellow signal wire is an AUX input. Connect it to an available receiver channel and assign that channel to a transmitter switch, knob or dial. The transmitter can then change drag-brake force while the crawler is being driven.

The maximum AUX signal corresponds to the programmed Drag Brake Force value. As the channel signal is reduced, drag brake decreases linearly until the lowest signal produces zero drag brake.

Heat reminder: stronger drag brake increases electrical load and heat. Use only the amount needed for the terrain, and check ESC and motor temperature after changing the setting.

6V, 7.4V and 8.4V Switch-Mode BEC

The built-in switch-mode BEC provides 5A continuous output and offers three selectable voltage levels. The supplied marketing material states a peak capability of up to 11A.

BEC Setting Typical Use Main Check
6.0V Standard-voltage receiver and servo systems Safe starting point for conventional electronics
7.4V Compatible high-voltage steering servos Receiver, servo and accessories must all support 7.4V
8.4V Compatible direct-voltage or high-performance HV servo systems Confirm the maximum rated voltage of every connected device

Do not select a BEC voltage above the maximum operating voltage of the receiver, steering servo, winch controller, lighting controller or other connected accessory. An incorrect voltage setting can damage the electronics and may also damage the ESC.

Sensorless Brushless and Brushed Motor Modes

The WP-10BL80 Crawler can operate in either Brushless or Brushed Motor mode. This setting must match the installed motor before the vehicle is driven.

Motor Type ESC Outputs Direction Change Crawler-Specific Functions
Sensorless Brushless Connect motor wires to A, B and C in any sequence Swap any two wires or change Motor Rotation FOC Power and Low Speed Throttle are available
Brushed Connect the two motor wires to A and C only Swap the two wires or change Motor Rotation Drag brake, punch, brake and reverse settings remain available

Brushed wiring warning: never connect a brushed motor to output B. Use A and C only, and set Motor Type to Brushed before operating the vehicle.

FOC Power and Low-Speed Throttle Control

FOC Power changes low-speed torque in brushless mode. Increasing the value can provide more climbing force in the lower throttle range, but it also increases motor temperature.

Low Speed Throttle determines how much of the trigger range is devoted to low-speed operation. For example, a 60% setting means the first 60% of trigger travel is treated as the low-speed range.

FOC Power

Available settings: Disabled, 9%, 12%, 15%, 18%, 21%, 24%, 27% and 30%.

Low Speed Throttle

Available settings: 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%.

FOC Power and Low Speed Throttle are effective only when the ESC is operating a brushless motor.

Optional Cooling Fan Support

The low-profile aluminum heat sink includes mounting points for a cooling fan. The supplied product material states that a fan and mounting screws are included, allowing the user to add active cooling when vehicle weight, gearing, motor load, ambient temperature or long crawling sessions require it.

Install the fan where it receives open airflow and make sure the blades cannot contact wiring. A fan does not correct an overloaded power system; reduce gearing, motor load, drag brake or FOC Power if temperature remains excessive.

Integrated 3.5mm Motor Connectors

The output side uses integrated 3.5mm female connectors. Compatible motors with matching plugs can be connected directly, reducing installation work and keeping the wiring layout compact.

Confirm that each plug is fully seated and insulated. Loose or partially connected bullet plugs create resistance, generate heat and may cause stuttering or power loss.

IP67 Protection for Crawler Environments

The ESC is designed to handle the wet, dusty and dirty conditions commonly encountered by RC crawlers. Its IP67 protection supports operation around splashes, rain, wet ground, sand and dust under normal use.

Splash and Water Resistance

Suitable for normal wet-trail use, rain and accidental water exposure.

Dust Resistance

Helps protect the electronics when crawling on dry dirt, sand and dusty terrain.

Water protection is not permanent and may decline through wear, impact, aging or damage to the housing and seals. Do not leave the ESC submerged for extended periods. Rinse off corrosive dirt with clean water when appropriate, dry the unit thoroughly and inspect wiring and connectors after wet use.

Thirteen adjustable crawler parameters for Hobbywing WP-10BL80 ESC

Drag Brake Force vs Drag Brake Rate

These two settings affect different parts of crawler braking:

Drag Brake Force

Controls the final amount of holding force when the throttle is at neutral.

Drag Brake Rate

Controls how quickly the ESC builds up to the selected holding force.

A high force with a soft rate can provide strong hill holding without an abrupt stop. A high force with an aggressive rate produces a faster and more immediate lock, but may make the crawler pitch forward or feel jerky.

Low-Voltage Cutoff Settings

Setting Approximate Threshold Use
Disabled No automatic low-voltage cutoff Not recommended for LiPo batteries
Low Approximately 2.8V per cell Maximum usable capacity with less voltage reserve
Medium Approximately 3.1V per cell Balanced general setting
High Approximately 3.4V per cell More voltage reserve and earlier cutoff

When the voltage falls below the selected threshold, the ESC reduces output to approximately 50% and cuts drive output around ten seconds later. Do not disable low-voltage protection when using a LiPo pack unless a separate reliable battery-protection method is in place.

Protection Functions

Motor Lock-Up Protection

Helps protect the system when the drivetrain or motor cannot rotate normally.

Low-Voltage Cutoff

Reduces and then cuts drive output when LiPo voltage falls below the selected threshold.

Thermal Protection

Limits operation when ESC temperature becomes excessive.

Throttle Signal Loss Protection

Stops normal drive output when a valid receiver throttle signal is lost.

Protection functions reduce risk but do not make an incorrectly geared, overloaded or poorly installed system safe. Repeated protection activation is a warning to check motor load, gearing, drivetrain resistance, battery condition, cooling and parameter settings.

Throttle Calibration

Throttle calibration must be completed before first use and whenever the transmitter, receiver or throttle endpoints are changed.

  1. Turn on the transmitter and set throttle D/R, EPA and ATL to 100%, with throttle trim at neutral.
  2. Connect the ESC to a suitable battery but leave the ESC switched off.
  3. Hold the SET button and press the ON/OFF button.
  4. Release SET immediately when the red LED begins flashing.
  5. Leave the throttle at neutral and press SET. The green LED flashes once.
  6. Move to full throttle and press SET. The green LED flashes twice.
  7. Move to full reverse and press SET. The green LED flashes three times.

Remove the pinion or keep all driven wheels clear of the ground during calibration and programming.

LED Status Guide

  • Startup: green LED flashes according to the detected LiPo cell count.
  • Neutral: red and green LEDs are normally off; the green LED may remain on when drag brake is set to 100% or higher.
  • Forward: red LED remains on; green LED also lights at full throttle.
  • Reverse: red LED remains on; green LED can also light at the full reverse endpoint when maximum brake force is set to 100%.
  • Low-voltage protection: repeating single red flash.
  • Thermal protection: repeating single green flash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hobbywing WP-10BL80 a brushed or brushless ESC?

It supports both brushed motors and sensorless brushless motors. Select the correct Motor Type before use.

Does the WP-10BL80 support sensored brushless motors?

The official specification identifies it as a sensorless brushless and brushed ESC. It does not provide a sensored-motor port.

Can the WP-10BL80 run on 4S LiPo?

Yes. The official input range is 2S–4S LiPo. Motor KV, gearing, vehicle weight and temperature must still be kept within a reasonable range.

How do I connect a brushed motor?

Connect the brushed motor’s two wires to ESC outputs A and C. Do not use output B, and set Motor Type to Brushed before running the vehicle.

How does real-time drag-brake adjustment work?

Connect the yellow AUX signal wire to an available receiver channel. Assign that channel to a transmitter knob, dial or switch, then adjust drag-brake force while driving.

Can I use an 8.4V steering servo?

Yes, provided the receiver, steering servo and every connected accessory are rated for 8.4V. Do not select 8.4V for standard-voltage electronics.

Is the ESC waterproof?

It has IP67 protection for normal splash, water and dust exposure. Do not leave it submerged for extended periods, and inspect and dry the unit after wet use.

What is the difference between drag-brake force and drag-brake rate?

Drag-brake force controls how strongly the vehicle holds at neutral. Drag-brake rate controls how quickly that holding force is applied.

What does FOC Power do?

In brushless mode, FOC Power increases torque in the low-speed throttle range. Higher settings can improve climbing force but also increase motor temperature.

Does it need a cooling fan?

Not every setup requires one. A fan is useful when vehicle load, gearing, motor choice, ambient temperature or long run time produces excessive heat. The supplied product material states that a fan and mounting screws are included.
