What Is the Best Battery for the Durafly P-40 Warhawk V2?

The best all-around performance battery for the Durafly Curtiss P-40 Warhawk V2 “Aleutian Tiger” 1100mm is a 2200mAh 4S 40C LiPo with an XT60 plug. This configuration closely matches the manufacturer’s 4S recommendation and provides the power needed for fast warbird passes, vertical maneuvers and confident takeoffs from a suitable grass runway.

Pilots who prefer a calmer aircraft can instead use a 2200mAh 3S LiPo. The lower voltage reduces maximum propeller speed and softens the throttle response, making it easier to fly smooth scale circuits without changing the motor, ESC or propeller.

Best 4S Performance CNHL Black Series 2200mAh 14.8V 4S 40C LiPo Battery with XT60 Plug
Closest match to the recommended 2200mAh 4S 40C setup. Suitable for stronger takeoff power, high-speed passes and full warbird performance.
Best 3S Option CNHL G+Plus 2200mAh 11.1V 3S 70C LiPo Battery with XT60 Plug
A strong 3S option for smoother power delivery, scale flying and pilots who do not need the full speed of the 4S setup.
Best Compact 3S CNHL Black Series 2200mAh 11.1V 3S Shorty 40C LiPo Battery with XT60 Plug
The shorty format may provide more flexibility when moving the pack forward in the battery compartment to establish the correct center of gravity.

3S or 4S: Which Setup Should You Choose?

The Durafly P-40 V2 supports both 3S 11.1V and 4S 14.8V LiPo power, but the two configurations give the aircraft noticeably different personalities.

2200mAh 3S Lower maximum speed, softer acceleration and a more scale-oriented flying style. A good choice for pilots who want to reduce the aggressive feel of the P-40 while retaining adequate power for normal paved or short-grass operations.
2200mAh 4S Stronger acceleration, higher top speed and better vertical performance. The additional power is useful for grass takeoffs, but it also makes torque and P-factor more noticeable during the takeoff roll.

A 4S battery does not automatically make the airplane easier to fly. It provides more power to recover from a poor approach or an uncomfortable flight condition, but it also requires disciplined throttle application and active rudder control during takeoff.

Why the 2200mAh 4S 40C Battery Is the Main Recommendation

The factory power system uses a Durafly 3536 900KV outrunner, a 45A brushless ESC and a 10x5 three-blade propeller. A standard 2200mAh 4S 40C battery provides the voltage needed to access the aircraft’s full performance while keeping the capacity within the recommended range.

The CNHL Black Series 2200mAh 4S 40C is therefore the most direct performance-oriented choice. Its XT60 connector matches the model’s factory ESC plug without requiring an adapter, and the 40C rating is already appropriate for the installed 45A system.

Use gradual throttle during takeoff rather than immediately applying full power. The P-40’s three-blade propeller produces noticeable rotational torque, particularly on 4S, and right rudder input may be required to keep the aircraft tracking straight.

Why Some Pilots May Prefer a 3S Battery

The aircraft is fast on 4S, and experienced reviewers have described the P-40 as a model that requires active control rather than an aircraft that simply holds a clean line by itself. A 3S pack reduces the available power and can make throttle management less demanding.

The CNHL G+Plus 2200mAh 3S 70C is the primary 3S recommendation. It retains strong voltage support under load while delivering a more restrained power level than 4S. This makes it suitable for scale passes, circuits and pilots who value smoothness more than maximum speed.

The CNHL Black Series 2200mAh 3S Shorty 40C is an alternative for installations where battery shape is especially important. Its compact format may make it easier to position the pack farther forward, although the final result must always be checked against the center-of-gravity range in the aircraft manual.

Battery Fit and Center-of-Gravity Setup

The battery is installed beneath the removable magnetic top hatch and held by the factory hook-and-loop strap. A standard 2200mAh pack may need to be pushed toward the front of the compartment, sometimes at a slight angle, to achieve the required balance point.

Do not assume that every 2200mAh battery has the same dimensions or weight. Before flying, check:

  • Battery length, width and height
  • Battery weight
  • Clearance around the motor mount and rotating components
  • Whether the pack can be moved far enough forward
  • Whether the hatch closes without pressing on the battery
  • The completed aircraft’s center of gravity

Inspect the inside of the battery bay before the first flight. If a molded plastic edge or hardware point can rub against the LiPo pouch, cover the area with thin foam, protective tape or a suitable non-slip battery liner.

XT60 Connector Compatibility

The Durafly P-40 Warhawk V2 uses an XT60 battery connection. All three main CNHL recommendations on this page include an XT60 plug, allowing them to connect directly to the factory ESC.

Avoid adding an unnecessary adapter where a direct XT60 battery is available. Adapters add wire length, occupy limited battery-bay space and create another electrical connection that must be secured before flight.

Can You Use the 2400mAh LiHV Shorty Batteries?

Yes. The CNHL Lightning 2400mAh 3S 11.4V LiHV Shorty and CNHL Lightning 2400mAh 4S 15.2V LiHV Shorty batteries are compatible options for the Durafly Curtiss P-40 Warhawk V2. Their compact shorty dimensions make them easier to position inside the battery compartment while the additional 200mAh capacity can provide slightly longer flight time than a standard 2200mAh pack.

Choose the 3S LiHV version for smoother throttle response and scale-style flying. Choose the 4S LiHV version for stronger acceleration, faster passes and greater power reserve during grass-field takeoffs or go-arounds.

Use a charger with the correct LiHV charging mode when charging these batteries to their full 4.35V-per-cell voltage. Secure the pack firmly, confirm that the hatch closes without pressure and check the aircraft’s center of gravity before flight, as battery position and weight can affect the P-40’s elevator response and overall handling.

Durafly P-40 V2 Battery FAQ

What battery does the Durafly P-40 Warhawk V2 use?

It is designed for a 2200mAh 3S or 4S LiPo battery with an XT60 connector. The manufacturer lists a higher C rating for the 3S setup and approximately 40C for the 4S setup.

Is 3S or 4S better for the Durafly P-40?

Choose 3S for smoother, slower and more scale-like flying. Choose 4S for maximum speed, stronger climbing performance and additional power for grass-field takeoffs.

Can a beginner fly the Durafly P-40 V2 on 3S?

Using 3S makes the power delivery more manageable, but it does not turn the aircraft into a beginner model. The P-40 still requires correct rudder use, careful elevator inputs, proper landing technique and experience with low-wing warbirds.

Does the battery need an XT60 plug?

Yes. The factory ESC is equipped with an XT60 connector, so an XT60-equipped battery provides the cleanest direct connection.

Can I use a battery larger than 2200mAh?

A slightly larger-capacity pack may fit, but capacity alone does not determine compatibility. The battery must fit the compartment, remain within a reasonable flying weight and allow the aircraft to balance at the specified center of gravity.

Should the battery be placed all the way forward?

Many 2200mAh installations require a forward battery position, but the correct location depends on the exact pack dimensions and weight. Move the battery as needed and verify the center of gravity rather than relying on one fixed position for every battery.

Important LiPo Battery Notice

Always use a balance charger with the correct cell count and charging mode. Inspect the battery before and after every flight, stop using any pack that is swollen or physically damaged, and allow the battery to cool before recharging.

Flight time varies with throttle use, propeller balance, weather, grass conditions, aircraft weight and battery condition. Use a conservative initial timer, land before the battery is deeply discharged and adjust the timer only after checking the resting cell voltage following several normal flights.
