The GEPRC DarkStar25 O4 Pro is best understood as an outdoor-focused 4S CineWhoop that prioritizes smooth DJI O4 Pro footage, protected exploration and stable flight lines over minimum weight or maximum agility.
Its 2.5-inch propellers, SPEEDX2 1404 4600KV motors and TAKER F722 35A AIO give it enough power for fast cinematic passes, gaps, flips and occasional freestyle. However, its approximately 180g dry weight and enclosed propeller protection make it noticeably more planted—and less efficient—than smaller, lighter CineWhoops.
Battery selection therefore changes the DarkStar25 more than the capacity number alone might suggest. A lighter 4S 750mAh pack preserves throttle response and recovery, while a heavier 850mAh pack produces a more settled cruising feel at the cost of agility and final takeoff weight.

CNHL Quick Verdict
Choose the DarkStar25 when you want a protected O4 Pro platform that feels smooth, controlled and confident outdoors. Choose a lighter platform when indoor agility, maximum efficiency or the lowest possible takeoff weight matters more. For the battery, the CNHL Lightning LiHV 750mAh 4S 120C XT30 is our best overall performance choice, while the CNHL MiniStar 850mAh 4S 70C XT30U is the standard-LiPo option for more deliberate cinematic cruising.

The DarkStar25 sits between a compact indoor CineWhoop and a larger outdoor cinematic platform. It remains small enough for close-proximity flying, protected gaps and lower-risk exploration, but its weight and 2.5-inch layout give it a more substantial feeling than a typical lightweight 2-inch whoop.
That extra mass is not automatically a disadvantage. In smooth outdoor lines, it helps the quad maintain momentum and resist small changes in direction. The aircraft feels settled, predictable and naturally damped rather than nervous or excessively reactive.
This is where the DarkStar25 performs best:
It is less ideal when the main goal is tight indoor flying, maximum battery efficiency, racing-style acceleration or aggressive open-prop freestyle.
One of the DarkStar25’s most important improvements is its five-point damping system. The O4 Pro camera and upper structure are isolated from the main frame to reduce vibration before it reaches the camera.
Retention screws pass through the central side dampers, helping prevent the canopy from separating during a crash. This addresses one of the most frustrating maintenance issues associated with earlier soft-mounted designs, where small silicone damping balls could be difficult to reinstall after they slipped out.
The front and rear damping points do not receive the same screw retention, so they still require care during repair. GEPRC includes spare damping balls and a dedicated installation tool, which is useful for pilots who expect regular contact with branches, gates or the ground.

In practical flights, the system produces clean stabilized footage without obvious jello under normal cruising conditions. RockSteady can further smooth the recorded image, but it is important to separate camera stabilization from the physical movement of the quad. In stronger wind, the aircraft still moves and corrects its position even when the final stabilized footage appears calm.
The DarkStar25’s defining flight characteristic is its planted, “on-rails” feeling. It carries momentum through turns and does not get pushed off its line as easily as some lighter CineWhoops.
The trade-off is that the aircraft does not always feel as powerful as its 4S specification and 2.5-inch propellers might suggest. The motors have useful output, but part of that power is spent carrying the approximately 180g airframe, protective shell, ducts and O4 Pro system.
Throttle response is therefore strong enough for outdoor recovery without feeling explosively light. Pilots moving from a smaller Pavo-style platform may notice that the DarkStar25 feels more deliberate and less eager to change direction.
The additional mass helps in light and moderate wind because the drone is not moved as easily by every small gust. It feels calmer when holding a line, especially below the tree line or around sheltered structures.
However, a ducted CineWhoop has more surface area for the wind to push against. In stronger gusts, the guards and enclosed body can still be moved sideways, and the pilot may need significant throttle to recover from a poorly timed dive or turn.
The correct conclusion is not that the DarkStar25 ignores wind. It is that it generally feels more settled than a much lighter micro CineWhoop while retaining the normal wind limitations of a protected-prop design.

Yes, but freestyle is a secondary capability rather than its main purpose.
The DarkStar25 can complete flips, rolls, power loops, gaps and faster outdoor lines. It also has enough motor output to recover from many mistakes, provided the pilot leaves enough space.
The limitation becomes more obvious during large zero-throttle dives and rapid nose-down transitions. The protected propellers can produce an audible wind-up as motor speed changes. When the props spin back up with the aircraft already pointing down, the quad may move forward and descend faster than expected.
For light freestyle and cinematic tricks, this is manageable once the pilot learns the behavior. For repeated aggressive dives, inverted moves or maximum precision around hard obstacles, an open-prop freestyle quad remains the better tool.
Best description: The DarkStar25 is a cinematic CineWhoop that can freestyle, not a freestyle quad that happens to have propeller guards.
GEPRC quotes 6 minutes 20 seconds to 8 minutes 30 seconds, but that figure is based on slow cruising. Actual flight time varies dramatically with throttle use, wind, battery condition and how much energy is spent repeatedly recovering the heavier airframe.
| Flight Style | Typical Practical Range | What Reduces Flight Time |
|---|---|---|
| Hard Freestyle | Approximately 3.5–5 minutes | Full-throttle recovery, repeated punch-outs, dives and wind correction |
| Mixed Outdoor Flying | Approximately 5–7 minutes | Changes in pace, altitude and direction |
| Slow Cinematic Cruising | Approximately 6.5–8.5 minutes | Wind, battery age, unnecessary weight and long high-throttle climbs |
Calm cinematic testing with batteries around 720–930mAh has produced results ranging from roughly 6.5 minutes to more than 8.5 minutes. Harder flying with packs around 850–880mAh can shorten the same aircraft to approximately 3.5–6 minutes.
This is why capacity alone cannot predict DarkStar25 flight time. A fresh battery with low internal resistance may outperform an older pack with a slightly higher capacity. A heavier battery may also consume part of its additional stored energy simply by increasing the power required to hover and recover.
GEPRC recommends a 4S 700–850mAh LiPo battery. The aircraft uses an XT30U-M connector, so a battery with the correct XT30 or XT30U mating connector can be used without adding a heavy adapter lead.
From the current CNHL range, there are two suitable choices:

| Specification | Lightning 750mAh | MiniStar 850mAh |
|---|---|---|
| Chemistry | LiHV | Standard LiPo |
| Nominal Voltage | 15.2V | 14.8V |
| Capacity | 750mAh | 850mAh |
| Discharge Rating | 120C continuous / 240C burst | 70C continuous / 140C burst |
| Dimensions | 79 × 20 × 29mm | 62 × 33 × 30mm |
| Approximate Weight | 79g | 110g |
| Connector | XT30 | XT30U |
| Best Use | Responsive outdoor flying and occasional freestyle | Deliberate cinematic cruising and standard charging |
| Handling Effect | Lighter and quicker to recover | Heavier and more settled |
The CNHL Lightning LiHV 750mAh 15.2V 4S 120C Battery with XT30 Plug is our preferred match for the DarkStar25 when flight response matters more than maximum nominal capacity.
At approximately 79g, it is about 31g lighter than the MiniStar 850mAh pack. On a compact CineWhoop, that is a significant difference. Lower battery mass reduces the work required to stop a descent, accelerate out of a turn or correct altitude after a protected-prop maneuver.
The 120C continuous rating also provides useful headroom for punch-outs, outdoor recovery and repeated throttle changes. This does not turn the DarkStar25 into a lightweight freestyle quad, but it helps preserve the responsive side of an aircraft that is already relatively heavy before the battery is installed.
The long, narrow shape is also well suited to a bottom-mounted layout, provided the pack is centered and the balance lead and main cable are kept clear of the propellers.
The CNHL MiniStar 850mAh 14.8V 4S 70C Battery with XT30U sits at the upper end of GEPRC’s recommended capacity range.
Its standard 14.8V LiPo chemistry suits pilots who prefer a conventional 4.20V-per-cell charging routine. The 850mAh capacity can support useful cinematic flight time, while the additional mass gives the DarkStar25 an even more planted feeling during steady lines and gentle turns.
Its 33mm side also uses the available bottom battery space closely. Keep the strap flat, confirm the battery cannot move sideways and check that the connector cable does not contact the propeller guards.
The DarkStar25 and Pavo 20 Pro 4S serve overlapping users, but they reach the goal from different directions.
| Priority | DarkStar25 | Pavo 20 Pro 4S |
|---|---|---|
| Flight Feel | Smooth, planted and deliberate | Lighter, quicker and more agile |
| Outdoor Wind | More inertia and a stable line | More affected by wind but quicker to accelerate against it |
| Indoor Flying | Possible, but larger and heavier | Generally better suited to tighter spaces |
| Efficiency | More power consumed by the heavier protected frame | Typically more efficient because of lower weight |
| Cinematic Character | More naturally settled and “on rails” | More responsive but can feel looser on very light batteries |
| GPS | Optional factory GPS configuration | Depends on the selected version and installation |

The Pavo is the stronger choice when minimum size, agility, efficiency and indoor flexibility are the priorities. The DarkStar25 makes more sense when a pilot prefers outdoor stability, smoother momentum and an optional factory GPS arrangement.
Neither drone completely replaces the other. The better choice depends on whether the pilot values responsive lightness or a more substantial cinematic feel.
The DarkStar25 has enough straight-line speed for dynamic cinematic passes and outdoor gaps. A GPS-assisted test recorded approximately 104km/h, although that run was influenced by wind and should not be treated as a guaranteed manufacturer top-speed specification.
Despite the 4S power system and protected 2.5-inch propellers, the aircraft is not unusually loud for its class. Its conventional motor orientation can sound more restrained than some pusher-style CineWhoops, although it remains a high-speed FPV aircraft rather than a quiet indoor toy.
The combination of protected props, optional GPS, red perimeter LEDs and stable flight behavior makes the DarkStar25 attractive for compact outdoor exploration. It should not be confused with a dedicated long-range platform: the ducts and enclosed structure are less efficient than an open-prop long-range quad.
The DarkStar25 has survived tree contact, vegetation impacts, grass tumbles and direct crash testing without immediate visible frame damage. The one-piece molded guard structure provides substantial protection around the propellers and motors.
Its enclosed internal layout also protects wires from branches and debris. The flight-controller USB-C port, O4 Pro USB port, SD card and bind access are available without completely dismantling the aircraft, which makes routine setup easier.
Maintenance is still more involved than on an exposed open-frame quad. Removing the AIO and motors requires backing out multiple screws, and the small damping balls can be frustrating if they become displaced.

The retention screws improve canopy security compared with earlier DarkStar designs, but crash-focused pilots should still keep the included spare damping balls and installation tool available.
The DarkStar25 is a strong match for pilots who want:
Consider a lighter or open-prop platform when your priority is:
GEPRC recommends a 4S 700–850mAh LiPo battery. The drone uses an XT30U-M connector, so a correctly oriented XT30 or XT30U battery plug can connect without an adapter.
The CNHL Lightning LiHV 750mAh 4S 120C XT30 is our best overall option because its approximately 79g weight helps preserve throttle response and recovery. The MiniStar 850mAh 4S 70C is the alternative for pilots who prefer standard LiPo charging and a more planted cruising setup.
Expect approximately 3.5–5 minutes during hard freestyle, 5–7 minutes during mixed outdoor flying and around 6.5–8.5 minutes during slow cinematic cruising. Battery condition, wind, weight and throttle use can substantially change these figures.
Yes. It can perform flips, rolls, power loops and faster gaps. Its protected-prop aerodynamics make it better suited to light or moderate freestyle than aggressive zero-throttle dives and large open-prop maneuvers.
It is relatively stable for a compact CineWhoop because its weight and tuning help it hold a line. Strong gusts can still push against the propeller guards and enclosed body, so it should not be described as unaffected by wind.
GPS is optional rather than standard on every version. GEPRC lists the GEP-M10 Nano as the supported GPS option. Adding GPS also changes the final takeoff weight.
The GEPRC DarkStar25 O4 Pro is not the lightest, fastest or most efficient CineWhoop in its size class. Its strength is how naturally its features work together: smooth O4 Pro footage, a stable outdoor tune, meaningful propeller protection, optional GPS and enough performance to make cinematic flights more adventurous.
It can cruise, explore, fly through gaps and perform occasional freestyle without feeling intimidating. The same protective structure that gives it this versatility also adds weight, increases power consumption and limits the sharpest freestyle maneuvers.
For the best balance of weight, discharge capability and response, choose the CNHL Lightning LiHV 750mAh 4S 120C XT30. Choose the MiniStar 850mAh 4S 70C XT30U when you prefer standard-LiPo charging and a heavier, more deliberate cinematic setup.
