The Hobbywing EZRUN MAX4 HV is a high-voltage, high-current brushless ESC built for 1/5-scale off-road vehicles and heavy-load RC trucks. With support for 6S to 12S LiPo, a rated 300A continuous / 2000A peak current, and both sensored and sensorless brushless operation, it is designed for large-scale RC power systems where vehicle mass, motor size and electrical load are well beyond those of a typical 1/8-scale setup.

Beyond raw current capacity, the MAX4 HV combines a powerful adjustable BEC, IP67 environmental protection, capacitor temperature protection, electronic switching, spark-reduction circuitry, OTA programming and data logging into one large-format ESC platform.

300A Power for Heavy-Duty 1/5 RC Systems

The MAX4 HV is designed around the much higher electrical load produced by large-scale RC vehicles. Its 300A continuous current rating and support for up to 12S LiPo make it a power-system option for heavy 1/5 platforms using appropriately matched motors, batteries, gearing and drivetrains.

The internal power stage uses a high-capacity thermal structure with copper heat-conduction elements, large heat-sink surfaces and active cooling to help move heat away from critical components during high-load operation.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX4 HV 300A ESC thermal design for high-power 1/5 RC cars

The 2000A peak specification should not be treated as a continuous operating target. Battery discharge capability, connectors, solder joints, motor load, gearing, airflow and vehicle weight all influence the real operating load seen by the ESC.

Full Sensored Control with Sensorless Support

The EZRUN MAX4 HV supports both sensored and sensorless brushless motors. When used with a compatible sensored motor and the correct sensor connection, the system can operate in full sensored mode for smoother low-speed response and more controlled power delivery.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX4 HV sensored brushless ESC mode for large scale RC cars

When using a sensored motor, the ESC's A, B and C outputs must correspond to the motor's A, B and C phase connections. If the sensor cable is not connected, a sensored motor can still run, but it will operate in sensorless mode.

New Waterproof-Oriented Sensor Cable Interface

The MAX4 HV uses a dedicated sensor interface designed around the environmental sealing requirements of large-scale off-road systems. For the highest level of sensor-connection waterproofing, Hobbywing recommends using its matching sensored motor and corresponding connection system.

The ESC can also work with supported standard sensor interfaces by using the appropriate conversion arrangement. The motor sensor converter cable is not included, so confirm the required cable or adapter before pairing the MAX4 HV with a different sensored motor.

IP67 Protection for Mud, Sand, Snow and Wet Conditions

Large-scale RC vehicles frequently encounter environments that are difficult on electronics. The MAX4 HV uses an IP67 waterproof and dustproof design intended to better handle mud, sand, wet terrain, ice and snow.

IP67 protection should not be interpreted as permission for permanent underwater operation. After running in water, mud, snow or other contaminated environments, clean the vehicle as appropriate, allow the ESC and connectors to dry thoroughly, and inspect the wiring and cooling system before the next run.

10A Continuous High-Output BEC

The built-in switch-mode BEC provides 10A continuous output and up to 25A instantaneous output, giving large-scale builds substantially more receiver-side power than a basic low-current BEC.

BEC voltage can be selected between 6V, 7.4V and 8.4V, allowing the ESC to support standard-voltage and compatible high-voltage servo systems.

Important: all electronics powered from the receiver bus must support the selected BEC voltage. Do not use 7.4V or 8.4V with a receiver, servo, light controller or accessory that is only rated for 6V.

Do Not Double-Power the Receiver

The red wire in the MAX4 HV receiver lead supplies the selected BEC voltage to the receiver and servo system. Do not connect another receiver power supply at the same time while the ESC BEC output remains connected.

If an external BEC or separate receiver battery is required, electrically isolate the MAX4 HV BEC output according to the installation requirements before connecting the additional power source.

Built-In Spark-Proof Design for High-Voltage Battery Connections

Connecting a large 6-12S battery system can create a noticeable electrical spark as the ESC capacitors charge. The MAX4 HV incorporates built-in spark-reduction circuitry designed to reduce this arcing at the battery connector.

This feature can help reduce stress on high-current battery connectors, but it does not replace the need for correctly rated connectors, proper solder joints, correct polarity and careful connection procedures.

Capacitor Thermal Protection

The capacitor bank plays an important role in managing voltage ripple and transient load in a high-current power system. The MAX4 HV includes dedicated capacitor overheat protection to help protect the ESC when excessive capacitor temperature is detected.

If capacitor thermal protection is triggered, the ESC reports the condition through its LED warning sequence so the cause of the excessive load or temperature can be investigated before continued use.

Durable Electronic Power Switch

The MAX4 HV uses an electronic on/off switch rather than relying on a conventional mechanical switch. This design is intended to better tolerate dirt, moisture, vibration and impact in large-scale off-road applications.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX4 HV durable waterproof dustproof electronic power switch

A short press powers the ESC on, while a long press powers it off. Always disconnect the battery after use; switching the ESC off electronically is not a substitute for physically disconnecting the LiPo during storage.

9 Adjustable ESC Parameters

The MAX4 HV provides nine main programmable parameters:

  1. Running Mode
  2. LiPo Cells
  3. Low Voltage Cut-Off
  4. Motor Rotation
  5. BEC Voltage
  6. Maximum Brake Force
  7. Maximum Reverse Force
  8. Punch
  9. Drag Brake Force

Three Running Modes

  • Forward with Brake – forward operation with braking and no reverse.
  • Forward / Reverse with Brake – brake-first reverse logic for general recreational driving.
  • Forward / Reverse – direct forward and reverse operation for applications that require it.

Punch Adjustment

Acceleration response can be adjusted through Levels 1-9. Higher settings provide a more aggressive initial response, but the appropriate setting depends on tire grip, vehicle weight, gearing, drivetrain strength and battery capability.

Low-Voltage Cut-Off

  • Low: 2.8V/cell
  • Medium: 3.1V/cell
  • High: 3.4V/cell

Important Cell-Count Setting for 7S, 9S and 11S

The MAX4 HV supports 6S through 12S LiPo. Its automatic cell-count recognition is intended for even-number configurations such as 6S, 8S, 10S and 12S.

When using 7S, 9S or 11S, manually select the correct cell count before driving. This helps prevent a partially discharged odd-cell battery from being incorrectly identified as a lower even-cell configuration.

The MAX4 HV supports real-time data and external OTA historical data logging with graphical records. It does not provide built-in historical curve logging without the external OTA system.

Protection Functions

  • LiPo low-voltage protection
  • ESC overheat protection
  • Motor overheat protection with supported matching Hobbywing motors
  • Throttle-signal loss protection
  • Current protection
  • Capacitor overheat protection

Motor overheat protection is not universal. The manual specifies that this function is effective when a compatible matching Hobbywing motor capable of providing the required temperature information is used, such as the EZRUN 70125SD. A different motor may operate normally but without ESC-controlled motor thermal protection.

Motor Selection and 12S Setup

For 12S operation, Hobbywing publishes a conventional recommendation of KV ≤600 with a 70125-size motor. This should be treated as a selection reference rather than a guarantee that every 600KV motor is appropriate for every vehicle.

Also consider:

  • Motor voltage and maximum RPM rating
  • Motor size and thermal capacity
  • Vehicle weight
  • Pinion / spur or final-drive gearing
  • Tire diameter
  • Terrain and driving style
  • Battery current capability
  • Connector and wire capacity
  • Motor and ESC temperatures under sustained load

Battery and Connector Setup

The MAX4 HV does not include a pre-installed battery connector. This allows the power system to be configured around the battery arrangement used in the vehicle, but the selected connector must be appropriately rated for the voltage and current of the installation.

Always verify polarity before connecting a battery. Reversed polarity can immediately damage the ESC.

Throttle Calibration

Throttle-range calibration should be completed during initial installation and repeated if the transmitter or throttle-channel settings such as trim, EPA or D/R are changed.

Because the MAX4 HV controls an extremely powerful large-scale brushless system, remove the motor pinion where practical or securely raise the driven wheels before calibration and programming.
