Rapid Throttle Response for Multirotor Control
The XRotor 40A uses a dedicated control program developed for multirotor ESC operation. A multirotor flight controller continuously adjusts the speed of individual motors to control pitch, roll, yaw, altitude and aircraft stability, making predictable throttle response an important part of the propulsion system.
Hobbywing's XRotor firmware is designed around these repeated motor-speed corrections rather than simply adapting a conventional surface-model or airplane ESC control strategy.
Simple Setup with Preset Multirotor Settings
Most XRotor 40A operating parameters are preset, helping simplify installation and setup. The primary adjustable parameter is motor Timing, which can be selected between Intermediate and High through transmitter throttle-stick programming.
Intermediate Timing is the default setting and is suitable for most motors, generally providing a useful balance between efficiency and operating temperature. High Timing can increase motor RPM where required, but it can also increase motor temperature.
After changing Timing, check both the motor and ESC carefully under the intended load before normal flight operation.
Optimized for Multirotor Brushless Motors
Hobbywing developed XRotor software for the brushless motor characteristics commonly used in multirotor aircraft, including disc-type motors. This helps provide suitable control behavior as the ESC responds continuously to commands from the flight controller.
Compatibility still needs to be evaluated as a complete propulsion system. Motor KV, propeller diameter and pitch, LiPo voltage, aircraft weight and cooling can all significantly affect motor current and ESC temperature.
Twisted-Pair Throttle Cable Helps Reduce Signal Interference
The XRotor 40A uses a twisted-pair throttle signal cable designed to reduce crosstalk and interference during signal transmission.
This is useful in multirotor installations where several ESCs, high-current battery wires, motors, power-distribution components and flight-control electronics can be positioned close together. Reducing interference helps support reliable communication between the flight controller and ESC.
Low-Resistance MOSFET Design
The XRotor 40A combines low-resistance MOSFETs with a dedicated MOSFET drive design to provide efficient switching and dependable current handling for multirotor operation.
The ESC is rated for 40A continuous current and 60A peak current. These figures define the ESC's electrical capability rather than a recommended current target for every aircraft.
Actual load depends on battery voltage, motor KV, propeller size and pitch, aircraft weight, airflow and ambient temperature. Verify real current draw with the intended propulsion setup and maintain suitable electrical and thermal margin.
Throttle Signal Frequency up to 621Hz
The Hobbywing XRotor 40A is compatible with various flight-control systems and supports throttle signal frequencies of up to 621Hz, allowing frequent throttle commands as the flight controller manages motor speed during multirotor operation.
No Built-In BEC
The XRotor 40A is a no-BEC multirotor ESC. It controls the brushless motor but does not provide regulated power for the flight controller, receiver or other onboard electronics.
A separate regulated power module, UBEC, power-distribution system or another appropriate power source must therefore be used where required by the aircraft's electrical architecture.
Always verify the voltage and current requirements of the flight controller and other onboard electronics before connecting power.
Throttle Range Calibration & Timing Programming
Throttle-range calibration should be performed when first installing a new XRotor ESC or when changing to another transmitter or control setup.
The XRotor 40A can also be programmed using the transmitter throttle stick and motor warning tones. Available programming functions include throttle calibration, Intermediate Timing and High Timing.
| Function | XRotor 40A |

Built-In Protection Functions
Start-Up Protection
If the ESC cannot start the motor normally within approximately two seconds while throttle is increased, motor output is stopped. Return the throttle to the bottom position before attempting another start. Possible causes include a poor motor connection, blocked propeller or other mechanical obstruction.
Overload Protection
If the load suddenly increases to an unusually high level, the ESC can cut motor output. Normal operation will not resume until the throttle is returned appropriately. The ESC can also attempt to restart when synchronization between the motor and ESC is lost.
Throttle Signal Loss Protection
If the ESC detects loss of throttle signal for more than approximately 0.25 second, it cuts motor output. Corresponding output can resume once a normal signal is received again.
Protection functions provide an additional safeguard, but they do not replace correct battery, motor, propeller, ESC, wiring and cooling selection.
Designed for 550/650 Class Multirotors
Hobbywing identifies the XRotor 40A as a reference ESC for 550/650 class multirotors and quadcopters. Compared with the XRotor 20A, the 40A model moves into a higher-current class and supports a broader 2-6S LiPo voltage range.
Frame size is only a reference. Two 550 or 650 class aircraft can place very different electrical loads on their ESCs depending on motor KV, propeller diameter and pitch, LiPo voltage, aircraft mass and flight style.
