What Is an 8S LiPo Battery Charger?

An 8S LiPo battery charger is a charger specifically rated to charge standard lithium polymer batteries containing eight cells connected in series. A standard 8S LiPo has a nominal voltage of 29.6V and reaches 33.6V when every cell is charged to 4.20V.

This matters because many common hobby chargers are limited to 6S batteries. A charger should only be considered an 8S LiPo charger when its specification explicitly lists standard LiPo support through eight cells.

8S LiPo Voltage: 29.6V Nominal and 33.6V Fully Charged

8S LiPo Specification Voltage
Cell count 8 cells in series
Nominal voltage 29.6V
Standard LiPo full-charge voltage 33.6V
Maximum voltage per cell 4.20V

Standard 8S LiPo batteries must use the charger's standard LiPo program. Do not select LiHV or another higher-voltage lithium program for a standard LiPo pack.

How Much Power Does an 8S LiPo Charger Need?

An 8S rating tells you that a charger can handle the battery voltage. It does not tell you how quickly it can charge a large 8S battery.

A useful approximation near full voltage is:

Charging Power ≈ 33.6V × Charging Current

For example, charging an 8S battery at 5A requires approximately 168W at the battery near the top of the charge. Charging at 10A requires roughly 336W. Actual input requirements will be higher because charging systems are not 100% efficient.

8S Charging Power by Battery Capacity at 1C

When a battery manufacturer permits a 1C charge rate, the charging current in amps is approximately equal to the pack capacity in amp-hours. The figures below illustrate the approximate battery-side power required near the 33.6V full-charge voltage.

8S Capacity Approx. 1C Current Approx. Power Near Full Voltage
3000mAh 3A 100.8W
4000mAh 4A 134.4W
5000mAh 5A 168W
6000mAh 6A 201.6W
8000mAh 8A 268.8W
10000mAh 10A 336W

These are approximate battery-side figures only. Allow additional power headroom for charger conversion losses, input limitations and thermal conditions. Never assume that a battery can be charged at 1C or above unless its manufacturer permits that charge rate.

Why 8S Charging Needs More Wattage Than 6S

An 8S battery requires more wattage than a 6S battery when both are charged at the same current because the 8S pack operates at a higher voltage.

For example, 5A near full charge requires approximately:

  • 6S LiPo: 25.2V × 5A ≈ 126W
  • 8S LiPo: 33.6V × 5A ≈ 168W

This is why simply buying a charger with an 8S cell-count rating is not enough for users with large-capacity packs. Charging wattage should be considered at the same time.

Compare Current 8S RC Battery Chargers

The current 8S charger range includes DC-only and AC/DC options, but all three models provide two independent charging channels and explicit support for standard LiPo batteries through 8S.

Charger Input Type Maximum Charging Power Channels Standard LiPo LiHV
ISDT P20 DC only 500W ×2 2 1–8S 1–7S
ISDT K2 ZIP AC / DC AC 200W total / DC 500W ×2 2 1–8S 1–7S
ISDT K4 AC / DC AC 400W total / DC 600W ×2 2 1–8S 1–7S

Maximum output requires suitable operating conditions. Actual charging power depends on input-source capability, battery voltage, active channels, thermal conditions and the battery's permitted charge rate.

8S LiPo Does Not Mean 8S LiHV

This distinction is especially important when shopping for an 8S charger. Standard LiPo and LiHV are different battery chemistries with different nominal and maximum charging voltages.

Battery Type 8S Nominal Voltage Max Voltage Per Cell 8S Full Voltage
Standard LiPo 29.6V 4.20V 33.6V
LiHV Typically 30.4V Up to 4.35V when specified by the battery Up to 34.8V
Important: The current ISDT P20, K2 ZIP and K4 support standard LiPo batteries through 8S, but their LiHV support is limited to 1–7S. Do not use the 8S LiPo rating as evidence that these chargers can charge an 8S LiHV pack to full LiHV voltage.

Is a 200W Charger Enough for an 8S LiPo?

It depends on battery capacity and desired current. A 200W output can charge an 8S battery, but its maximum available current falls as the pack voltage rises.

Near 33.6V, a theoretical 200W output corresponds to approximately 5.95A before accounting for conversion losses. That can be adequate for a 5000mAh 8S pack around a 1C charge rate, but it provides little headroom for a 6000mAh pack at 6A.

For 8000mAh, 10000mAh or multiple 8S packs, higher available wattage becomes increasingly useful.

Why 500W and 600W Chargers Matter for Large 8S Batteries

High charger wattage provides additional current headroom as battery voltage and capacity increase. For example, an 8S 8000mAh battery charged at 8A requires approximately 269W near full voltage before charger losses.

A charger capable of 500W or 600W on a channel therefore has substantially more theoretical capacity than a 200W unit for large 8S packs. That does not mean the battery should automatically be charged at a higher current—the battery manufacturer's charge-rate specification remains the limit.

Higher wattage is best understood as available capacity, not a command to charge every battery faster.

AC vs DC Power for 8S Charging

The difference between AC and DC charging capability becomes particularly noticeable with large 8S batteries.

The ISDT K2 ZIP and K4 can connect directly to compatible AC mains power, but both offer substantially greater charging output when connected to an appropriately specified external DC source. The P20 is DC-only and therefore always requires an external power supply.

When planning a high-power 8S charging station, treat the charger and its power source as one complete system. A 600W charger channel cannot provide 600W if the external DC source cannot safely supply the required voltage, current and total wattage.

Dual-Channel 8S Charging: Check Total Power

All current chargers in this collection have two independent charging channels. This allows two supported batteries to run separate charging tasks at the same time.

That can be particularly useful for RC models that use two batteries, pilots preparing several flight packs, or users who simply want to reduce the amount of time spent waiting for one battery to finish before starting another.

Remember: Two high-power channels can create a very large combined input-power requirement. Always check total charger capability and the capacity of the AC or DC power source when both channels are active.

Should You Buy an 8S Charger If You Only Use 6S Batteries?

You do not need an 8S charger simply because it has a higher cell-count rating. A good 6S charger can be completely sufficient when all of your batteries are 6S or smaller.

An 8S model becomes more attractive if you expect to move into 8S RC systems later, or if the charger also offers other features you need such as higher wattage, dual channels or more flexible input options.

All 1–8S standard LiPo chargers can also charge supported 6S and smaller packs. If 8S capability is unnecessary, compare our 6S LiPo battery chargers for RC for a wider selection.

Do You Need to Balance Charge an 8S LiPo?

Balance charging is strongly recommended for multi-cell LiPo batteries. An 8S pack contains eight cells, and the balance connection allows the charger to monitor each cell rather than relying only on total pack voltage.

Always use the appropriate balance connection, confirm the charger's detected cell count and verify that the selected chemistry is standard LiPo before beginning the charging task.

8S Chargers for RC Cars, Airplanes, Helicopters, Boats and FPV

8S battery systems are used in a range of higher-power RC applications, including large RC cars and bashers, airplanes, helicopters, boats, FPV systems and other platforms designed around higher battery voltage.

The RC vehicle itself does not determine the correct charging current. Battery chemistry, capacity, cell count and the manufacturer's permitted charge rate remain the deciding factors.

What to Check Before Buying an 8S LiPo Charger

  • True 8S LiPo support: confirm that standard LiPo is explicitly listed through eight cells.
  • Charging wattage: large 8S packs can require substantially more power than 4S or 6S batteries.
  • Charging current: maximum current and maximum wattage must be considered together.
  • AC or DC input: decide whether you need direct wall-power convenience, external high-power DC operation or both.
  • External DC power supply: DC chargers require an appropriately rated source capable of supporting the desired output.
  • Number of channels: consider whether you regularly need to prepare two batteries during the same session.
  • Total simultaneous power: check power availability when both channels are operating.
  • Battery chemistry: do not confuse standard 8S LiPo support with 8S LiHV compatibility.
  • Balance connection: verify the correct eight-cell balance connection.
  • Main battery connector: use an appropriately rated charging lead or adapter where required.
  • Battery charge-rate limit: never select charging current based only on the charger's maximum capability.

8S LiPo Charger FAQ

What voltage is an 8S LiPo battery?

A standard 8S LiPo battery is 29.6V nominal and reaches 33.6V when fully charged to 4.20V per cell.

Can a 6S charger charge an 8S LiPo?

No. A charger limited to standard LiPo batteries through 6S should not be used to charge an 8S pack. Use a charger that explicitly lists standard LiPo support through 8S.

Can an 8S charger charge a 6S LiPo?

Yes, when its supported standard LiPo range is 1–8S. A 6S battery falls within that range.

How many watts do I need for an 8S 5000mAh LiPo at 1C?

A 5000mAh battery charges at approximately 5A at 1C. Near 33.6V, that represents roughly 168W of battery-side power. Additional charger and input-power headroom is recommended to account for conversion losses.

How many watts do I need for an 8S 8000mAh battery at 1C?

At approximately 8A, an 8S battery requires roughly 269W near full voltage. The charging system should provide additional headroom beyond this theoretical battery-side figure.

Can I charge two 8S LiPo batteries at once?

Yes, with a compatible dual-channel charger. Both the charger and its power source must have enough total power for the two charging tasks, and each battery must remain within its permitted charge rate.

Can an 8S LiPo charger charge an 8S LiHV battery?

Not automatically. Standard LiPo and LiHV use different charging voltages. The current ISDT P20, K2 ZIP and K4 support standard LiPo through 8S but list LiHV support only through 7S, so they should not be used to charge an 8S LiHV battery to full LiHV voltage.

Do I need an external power supply for an 8S charger?

A DC-only charger such as the P20 requires an external DC power source. AC/DC chargers such as the K2 ZIP and K4 can operate directly from compatible AC mains power or from an appropriate external DC source.

Is balance charging important for 8S LiPo batteries?

Yes. Balance charging lets the charger monitor all eight individual cell voltages and helps keep the pack correctly balanced during charging.
