The Hobbywing EZRUN MAX5 HV G2 is a high-voltage 250A sensored brushless ESC developed for large-scale RC vehicles that need substantially more current capability, voltage headroom and motor control than a typical 1/8 power system. Supporting 6-12S LiPo, a 250A continuous / 1600A peak current rating and 56118-size brushless motors, it is aimed primarily at powerful 1/5 scale buggies and trucks.
This generation combines sensored operation, an upgraded waterproof sensor interface, intelligent freewheeling technology, adjustable Turbo Timing, an 8A high-voltage BEC, an upgraded capacitor system, anti-spark protection and flexible external programming. It is a strong power-system direction for vehicles such as the Losi DBXL-E, electric-converted Losi 5IVE-T / 5T, ARRMA Kraton 8S and ARRMA Outcast 8S when motor specification, gearing, battery voltage, installation space and drivetrain load are appropriate.

12S High-Voltage Power for 1/5 Scale RC
The MAX5 HV G2 supports 6-12S LiPo and is rated for 250A continuous current with a 1600A peak rating. This gives large-scale builders considerably more voltage and current headroom than conventional 1/8-scale power systems.
On 8S, Hobbywing recommends motors up to approximately 1200KV in the 56118 size class. On 12S, the recommended value drops to approximately 800KV. Motor KV therefore needs to be considered together with battery voltage, gearing, tire diameter and total drivetrain load.
Upgraded Waterproof Sensor Interface
The MAX5 HV G2 uses a redesigned sensor-wire interface intended to improve environmental sealing around one of the more vulnerable connection points in a sensored brushless system. This helps the ESC retain precise sensored control while being better suited to large-scale off-road use in dirt, wet grass, mud, snow and other demanding conditions.
When running a sensored motor, ESC phases A, B and C must connect to the corresponding A, B and C motor phases. The sensor cable must also be connected in the correct orientation. If the sensor cable is disconnected, a sensored brushless motor can still operate in sensorless mode.
Intelligent Freewheeling for Lower Heat
Hobbywing's intelligent freewheeling technology is designed to reduce electrical loss under changing throttle conditions. In a high-current 1/5 system, improving efficiency also helps reduce unnecessary heat generation inside the ESC.
Hobbywing's promotional comparison shows a substantial reduction in temperature versus the previous MAX5 generation under its test conditions. Actual operating temperature still depends on gearing, vehicle weight, motor load, airflow, ambient temperature and driving style.
Turbo Timing Up to 24°
The MAX5 HV G2 supports adjustable Turbo Timing up to 24 degrees. Turbo Timing adds electronic timing when the throttle reaches full output, allowing additional motor RPM for high-speed sections and top-end performance.
Hobbywing's matched-system promotional material shows an approximately 18% performance increase when the ESC is paired with the appropriate EZRUN 56118 SD G2 motor. This is a system-specific comparison and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed 18% increase in every RC vehicle.
Powerful 8A High-Voltage BEC
The built-in switch-mode BEC offers selectable 6V, 7.4V or 8.4V output with 8A continuous current and up to approximately 25A instantaneous current.
This is useful for high-torque large-scale steering servos, but the selected BEC voltage must remain within the operating limits of the receiver, servo and other receiver-powered accessories.
Upgraded Capacitor System
The MAX5 HV G2 uses a larger internal capacitor system than the previous-generation MAX5. Hobbywing's product material identifies approximately 1260µF total capacitance, representing an increase of around 45%.
The ESC also includes capacitor over-temperature protection. If capacitor protection activates, check gearing, drivetrain load, battery condition, cooling and sustained current demand before continuing to run the vehicle.
Built-In Anti-Spark Protection
Large capacitor banks can create a strong electrical arc when a high-voltage battery is connected. The MAX5 HV G2 includes an internal anti-spark circuit intended to reduce connection arcing and battery-connector wear when using high-voltage 6-12S systems.
The ESC does not come with a battery connector pre-installed, so choose a connector with sufficient current capability for the intended system and confirm polarity before connecting the battery.
IP67 All-Weather Protection
The MAX5 HV G2 is designed to better tolerate the conditions commonly encountered by large-scale RC trucks and buggies, including water spray, mud, sand, dust, ice and snow.
IP67 protection does not mean permanent underwater operation. Sealing can deteriorate through age, impacts or damaged wiring, and prolonged immersion should be avoided. After wet or dirty running, clean, dry and inspect the ESC, connectors and fan before storage.
Programming Options
The MAX5 HV G2 uses an independent programming port. This port must be used when connecting compatible Hobbywing programming equipment.
| LED Program Card | Supported |
|---|---|
| LCD G2 Program Box | Supported |
| LCD PRO | Supported |
| OTA Programmer | Supported |
| WiFi Express | Not Supported |
| Programming Port | Independent Programming Port |
The program box or OTA module must be connected to the dedicated programming port rather than the receiver throttle lead.
OTA Real-Time Data and Data Logging
The MAX5 HV G2 can work with the optional Hobbywing OTA Bluetooth Module and HW LINK app for wireless programming and data access.
With the OTA module connected, drivers can view operating information such as throttle position, ESC voltage, current, ESC temperature, motor temperature and RPM-related data when supported by the system. This can help with gearing, cooling and setup decisions after high-load runs.

Compatible RC Models and Applications
The MAX5 HV G2 is primarily intended for high-power 1/5 scale buggies and trucks. Suitable application directions include:
- Losi DBXL-E
- Losi 5IVE-T / 5T electric conversions
- ARRMA Kraton 8S
- ARRMA Outcast 8S
- Other large-scale 6-12S brushless builds using an appropriately matched motor and drivetrain
These references should not be treated as universal plug-and-play compatibility. Confirm ESC mounting space, motor mount, battery configuration, connector setup, gearing and wire routing for the exact vehicle.
Throttle Calibration
Throttle calibration should be completed during first installation and repeated after changing the transmitter, receiver, throttle trim, EPA or related throttle-channel settings.
The calibration process records:
- Neutral position
- Full-throttle endpoint
- Full-brake endpoint
Configure the transmitter failsafe so a lost radio signal returns the throttle channel to neutral or cuts motor output.
FAQ
Is the Hobbywing MAX5 HV G2 a 12S ESC?
Yes. The MAX5 HV G2 supports 6-12S LiPo. For conventional 12S applications, Hobbywing recommends a 56118-size motor around 800KV or lower.
How many amps is the MAX5 HV G2?
The official rating is 250A continuous / 1600A peak.
Does the MAX5 HV G2 support sensored motors?
Yes. It supports both sensored and sensorless brushless motors. For sensored operation, the A/B/C motor phases and sensor cable must be connected correctly.
Does it have built-in Bluetooth?
No. HW LINK app connectivity requires the optional Hobbywing OTA Bluetooth Module.
Does it support Turbo Timing?
Yes. Turbo Timing is adjustable up to 24°. Higher Turbo settings can increase motor RPM, current draw and temperature.
What BEC voltage can I use?
The BEC is selectable between 6V, 7.4V and 8.4V. Choose only a voltage supported by the receiver, servo and other connected electronics.
Does it include a battery connector?
No. The MAX5 HV G2 has 8AWG battery wires but no pre-installed battery connector. Choose an appropriately rated connector for the intended voltage and current.
Can it be used in ARRMA Kraton 8S or Outcast 8S?
Both are strong application directions for the MAX5 HV G2, but physical installation, gearing, motor specification, connector system and wire clearance must still be confirmed.
