Integrated ESC & Motor for Cleaner 1/8 Crawler Builds
The Fusion 8IGHT SE combines the electronic speed controller and motor into one integrated 41 × 69mm power unit. The main benefit is not simply reduced component count: eliminating a separate ESC and the usual external motor phase wiring can make chassis layout cleaner and leave more flexibility for the receiver, lighting controller, winch electronics and other crawler accessories.
At 326.5g including wires and connectors, it is still a substantial 1/8-scale power system. Builders should therefore verify mounting clearance and vehicle balance instead of treating the integrated layout as automatically compatible with every crawler chassis.
FOC Drive for Controlled Low-Speed Torque
Field-Oriented Control is the defining feature of the QUICRUN Fusion family. Instead of focusing purely on maximum RPM, the system is tuned around the low-speed precision that technical crawling demands.
At very low throttle openings, FOC control helps produce smooth startup, strong low-speed torque and more linear response. Sine-wave operation also contributes to quieter running, lower unnecessary heat generation and smoother power delivery than a conventional unsensored brushless setup.
The 1800KV specification reinforces that crawler-oriented character. It should be viewed primarily as a controlled, torque-focused 1/8 crawler power system rather than a high-speed basher combination.
RPM Matching for Climbing and Controlled Descents
In Forward and Reverse – RPM Matching mode, the Fusion 8IGHT SE uses speed closed-loop control to respond to changing drivetrain load. If resistance increases while climbing an obstacle, the controller can increase torque output to keep vehicle speed closer to the driver's throttle command.
The same closed-loop behavior helps create a more controlled feeling on descents. Rather than allowing terrain resistance alone to determine wheel speed, the system continuously adjusts torque around the commanded speed.
This behavior is specific to the RPM Matching running mode. The two Normal modes do not automatically maintain vehicle speed when terrain resistance changes.
Three Running Modes
The Fusion 8IGHT SE provides three selectable operating modes so the power delivery can be matched to different crawler driving preferences:
- Forward and Reverse – RPM Matching: direct forward/reverse with closed-loop speed control.
- Forward/Reverse with Brake – Normal Mode: brake-first reverse behavior similar to a conventional sensored brushless or brushed ESC.
- Forward and Reverse – Normal Mode: direct reverse without automatic RPM matching.
Choosing the correct mode is important because RPM Matching fundamentally changes how the system reacts to terrain load.
Adjustable Drag Brake for Better Hill Holding
Crawler setup is often less about maximum braking force than how naturally the vehicle settles when the throttle returns to neutral. The Fusion 8IGHT SE therefore separates Drag Brake Force from Drag Brake Rate.
Drag Brake Force determines the final amount of braking applied at neutral, while Drag Brake Rate determines how aggressively that braking force builds. This makes it possible to tune the vehicle for stronger incline holding without necessarily making every throttle release abrupt.
Drag Brake Force can be disabled or adjusted through Levels 1–8. Drag Brake Rate includes Auto plus Levels 1–8.
2–4S LiPo Support with 60A Continuous Output
The Fusion 8IGHT SE supports 2S, 3S and 4S LiPo batteries and is rated at 60A continuous / 200A peak current. That makes it suitable for crawler drivetrains that require more power than smaller 1/10-oriented Fusion systems while still retaining fine low-speed control.
Battery voltage should be selected around gearing, tire size, drivetrain load and the desired wheel speed rather than simply choosing the highest available cell count.
6V / 7.4V Adjustable 4A Switch-Mode BEC
The built-in switch-mode BEC provides a 4A continuous output and can be set to either 6.0V or 7.4V.
Use 6.0V with standard-voltage receiver and servo equipment unless the electronics specifically support a higher voltage. The 7.4V option is intended for compatible high-voltage receivers and servos.
Important 7.4V BEC note: with a 2S LiPo input, the BEC cannot maintain a regulated 7.4V output as battery voltage falls. In that condition the BEC output follows the available battery voltage. Hobbywing therefore recommends using a 3S or 4S LiPo when the BEC is configured for 7.4V.
Never select a BEC voltage above the maximum operating voltage of the receiver, steering servo, winch controller, lighting system or other connected electronics.
IP67 Protection for Real Crawler Conditions
The complete Fusion 8IGHT SE system carries an IP67 protection rating, helping protect the power unit against water, dust, mud, snow and other conditions commonly encountered by trail and rock crawlers.
IP67 should not be interpreted as permission for permanent or prolonged underwater operation. Protective performance can also decline with age, impacts, seal wear or poor maintenance. After wet or muddy driving, clean the vehicle, allow the power system to dry and inspect the wiring and connectors before the next run.

RPM Decrease Rate only applies in Normal running modes. A higher level makes RPM fall more quickly when throttle is reduced, while lower settings allow a more natural coasting feel.
LiPo Cutoff Voltage Settings
Low-voltage protection can be set to:
- Disabled
- Low: 3.0V per cell
- Medium: 3.25V per cell
- High: 3.5V per cell
The default LiPo cell-count setting is Auto. If the same battery cell count is used consistently, manually selecting the correct cell count can reduce the risk of the ESC incorrectly detecting a heavily discharged pack.
LED and LCD Programming Support
The Fusion 8IGHT SE uses the independent programming interface integrated into the electronic switch. It supports:

- Compatible LCD G2 programming box
The system does not support OTA Programmer adjustment, and online firmware upgrading is not supported.
Programming boxes are accessories unless specifically stated as included with the product package.
Protection Functions
The system includes multiple electronic protection functions:
- Battery low-voltage protection
- Thermal protection
- Throttle signal loss protection
- Motor lock-up protection
When thermal protection is triggered, output is reduced before the system eventually shuts down if the temperature remains excessive. Output can recover automatically after the system cools sufficiently.
The external temperature of the system should not be allowed to exceed 90°C / 194°F during use.
Installation and Receiver Power Notes
The motor provides both 4 × M3 and 4 × M4 mounting holes with a maximum installation depth of 5.0mm. Always verify screw length before installation. Screws that extend too far into the motor can cause internal damage.
The red wire in the throttle cable supplies BEC power to the receiver. Do not simultaneously power the receiver from another BEC or receiver battery unless the Fusion's red BEC wire has first been disconnected and safely insulated. Two power sources connected to the receiver bus at the same time can damage the ESC or other electronics.
Battery polarity must also be checked before connection. Reverse-polarity connection can damage the power system.
Throttle Calibration
Throttle calibration should be completed before first use and whenever the transmitter or receiver is changed. The calibration procedure stores neutral, full throttle and full reverse positions so the ESC can correctly interpret the transmitter signal.
For safety, remove the pinion gear or keep the driven wheels completely clear of the ground while performing calibration and setup.
Automatic Motor Pairing
If the system experiences a severe impact, abnormal heating or abnormal power output, Hobbywing provides an automatic motor-pairing procedure. The motor must first be separated from the gearbox so it is completely unloaded. After pairing is completed, recalibrate the throttle range before returning the vehicle to normal use.
FAQ
Is the Fusion 8IGHT SE a separate ESC and motor combo?
No. The ESC electronics and motor are integrated into a single 2-in-1 FOC power unit. They should not be treated as two independently replaceable components.
Can the QUICRUN Fusion 8IGHT SE run on 4S LiPo?
Yes. The system supports 2–4S LiPo batteries and is rated at 60A continuous and 200A peak current.
Can I use the 7.4V BEC setting on 2S?
The setting is available, but with a 2S LiPo the BEC cannot maintain a regulated 7.4V output as pack voltage falls. Hobbywing recommends 3S or 4S when using the 7.4V BEC setting.
Does RPM Matching work in every running mode?
No. Automatic closed-loop speed matching is used in the Forward and Reverse RPM Matching mode. Normal modes behave more like conventional sensored brushless or brushed ESC operation, where vehicle speed changes as terrain resistance changes.
Which programming boxes work with the Fusion 8IGHT SE?
The system supports the Hobbywing LED Program Box and compatible LCD Program Box Pro/G2 devices through the independent programming port on the electronic switch. OTA programming is not supported.
Is the Fusion 8IGHT SE waterproof?
The system carries an IP67 protection rating and is designed for crawler environments involving water, mud and dust. This does not mean the system should be left submerged for extended periods, and wet-running maintenance is still required.
Important Notice
- Check chassis clearance, motor mounting dimensions and gearing before purchase.
- Do not exceed the voltage rating of the receiver, steering servo or accessories when selecting BEC voltage.
- Do not connect another receiver power source while the ESC BEC red wire remains connected.
- Do not reverse battery polarity.
- Do not use excessively long motor mounting screws.
- Disconnect the battery after every run. The system still draws a small amount of current while switched off.
- IP67 protection does not mean permanent underwater operation.
