Waterproof Sensor Harness for Full Sensored Operation

The MAX8 G2S supports both sensored and sensorless brushless motors. When paired with a compatible sensored motor, its waterproof-oriented sensor harness helps retain the controlled low-speed response of a sensored system without giving up the environmental protection expected from a high-performance off-road ESC.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S waterproof sensor harness for sensored 1/8 brushless motors

With a sensored motor, connect ESC phases A, B and C to the corresponding A, B and C motor terminals. Running a sensored motor without its sensor connection will cause the system to operate in sensorless mode.

Standard-interface sensored motors may require the appropriate Hobbywing sensor adapter or conversion cable. Confirm the connection required by the specific motor before installation.

6V / 7.4V / 8.4V Adjustable High-Voltage BEC

The MAX8 G2S includes a switch-mode BEC with 6A continuous output and selectable 6V, 7.4V or 8.4V output voltage. This provides flexibility for standard-voltage steering systems as well as compatible high-voltage, high-torque servos.

Official product material also specifies a maximum BEC output of up to 15A, helping the receiver-side power system handle short high-current demands from large steering servos.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S 6V 7.4V 8.4V adjustable BEC with 6A continuous output

Important: set BEC voltage according to the maximum operating voltage of the receiver, steering servo and every other receiver-powered accessory. Do not use 7.4V or 8.4V with equipment that is rated only for 6V.

Do Not Double-Power the Receiver

The ESC throttle lead supplies BEC voltage to the receiver. Do not connect a second receiver power source while the MAX8 G2S BEC remains electrically connected.

If a separate external BEC or receiver battery is required, correctly isolate the ESC's BEC output before connecting the additional power source.

Capacitor Overheat Protection

High-current acceleration, aggressive gearing and heavy vehicles place substantial load on the ESC's capacitor bank. The MAX8 G2S includes dedicated capacitor overheat protection that monitors this part of the power system and can trigger protection when excessive thermal stress is detected.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S capacitor overheat protection for high-current 1/8 RC systems

If capacitor thermal protection is triggered, investigate gearing, vehicle load, cooling and operating temperature rather than repeatedly restarting the ESC without addressing the cause.

Up to 32° Turbo Timing

The MAX8 G2S brings adjustable Turbo Timing to a 1/8 EZRUN power system. Turbo Timing can increase motor RPM once the throttle reaches full throttle, making it particularly useful when more top-end speed is desired from a properly matched sensored motor.

For the MAX8 G2S, Turbo Timing can be adjusted from 0° to 32°.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S 32 degree turbo timing for 1/8 sensored brushless power systems

Turbo Timing should be treated as a tuning tool rather than free power. Increasing timing can raise motor RPM, current draw and operating temperature. Monitor motor and ESC temperatures closely, especially when gearing is already aggressive.

Turbo Delay

Turbo activation can also be delayed after full throttle is reached. Available delay settings allow the driver to decide whether Turbo Timing activates immediately or only after full throttle has been held for a selected period.

IP67 Protection for Demanding RC Conditions

The MAX8 G2S uses a waterproof and dustproof construction intended for the mud, water, snow, sediment and changing weather conditions that high-performance RC trucks can encounter.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S IP67 waterproof and dustproof ESC for 1/8 RC cars and trucks

IP67 protection does not mean permanent underwater use. After wet, muddy or snowy running, clean the vehicle as appropriate, allow the electronics and connectors to dry thoroughly and inspect the wiring before the next session.

Efficient Cooling System

The MAX8 G2S uses an integrated heat-sink structure together with a high-flow 30 × 30 × 10mm frameless cooling fan to move heat away from the power stage.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S frameless fan and efficient cooling system

Cooling performance still depends on vehicle airflow, gearing, ambient temperature and sustained load. An efficient cooling system cannot compensate indefinitely for excessive gearing or an overloaded motor.

Intelligent Fan Start and Stop

The cooling fan does not need to run continuously. The MAX8 G2S uses an intelligent fan start-stop function that keeps the fan off when ESC temperature is low and automatically starts cooling when the preset temperature threshold is reached.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S intelligent cooling fan automatic start and stop function

This reduces unnecessary fan noise and power consumption while still providing active cooling when ESC temperature requires it.

Built-In Data Logging

Unlike an ESC that requires a separate telemetry module, the MAX8 G2S includes onboard data-recording capability. Operating information stored by the ESC can be accessed from the HW LINK V2 app.

The system can store data from the latest run and provides five stored extreme-value records as well as real-time data and historical graphical information through the app.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S built-in data logging and historical running data in HW LINK V2

This makes it easier to review variables such as ESC load and temperature after a run when tuning gearing, Turbo Timing or punch settings.

Built-In Bluetooth – No Separate OTA Module Required

One of the biggest differences between the MAX8 G2S and many earlier Hobbywing ESCs is its built-in Bluetooth module integrated into the electronic switch.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S built-in Bluetooth connection to HW LINK V2 mobile app

With the ESC powered on, connect directly from the HW LINK V2 app to:

  • Adjust ESC parameters
  • View real-time operating data
  • Review stored and historical data
  • Update ESC firmware

No separate OTA Programmer is required for these functions.

Firmware Updates Through HW LINK V2

The built-in Bluetooth connection also supports online ESC firmware updating. Available firmware can be selected in the HW LINK V2 app, allowing the MAX8 G2S software to be updated without adding a separate programming module.

The factory Bluetooth device name uses the HW_BLE**** format and the default password is 888888. The electronic switch can be used to restore the factory Bluetooth name and password if required.

Optimized Hardware and Intelligent Freewheeling

The G2S hardware platform incorporates optimized electronics and intelligent freewheeling technology to improve stability and efficiency under changing throttle conditions.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S optimized hardware with intelligent freewheeling technology

The goal is not simply stronger output, but more predictable power delivery when a heavy 1/8 vehicle transitions between partial throttle, acceleration and high-load running.

Powerful Output with Linear Throttle Control

A 160A ESC for a 1/8 vehicle needs more than raw current capacity. The MAX8 G2S is tuned to combine strong acceleration with smooth and progressive throttle response, helping the driver control available power rather than simply delivering it abruptly.

Hobbywing EZRUN MAX8 G2S powerful linear throttle response for 1/8 RC cars and monster trucks

Actual launch behavior still depends heavily on Punch setting, motor KV, gearing, tires, surface grip and vehicle weight.

12 Adjustable ESC Parameters

The MAX8 G2S provides twelve main programmable parameters through HW LINK V2:

  1. Running Mode
  2. LiPo Cells
  3. Cutoff Voltage
  4. Motor Rotation
  5. BEC Voltage
  6. Maximum Brake Force
  7. Maximum Reverse Force
  8. Punch
  9. Drag Brake Force
  10. Initial Throttle Force
  11. Turbo Timing
  12. Turbo Delay

Running Modes

  • Forward with Brake
  • Forward / Reverse with Brake
  • Forward / Reverse

Low-Voltage Cut-Off

  • Low: 2.8V/cell
  • Medium: 3.1V/cell
  • High: 3.4V/cell

Punch

Punch adjusts overall acceleration response. Higher values provide a more aggressive response, while lower values can make launches easier to control on low-grip surfaces and may help reduce motor hesitation when throttle is applied abruptly.

Initial Throttle Force

Initial Throttle Force adjusts the minimum initial power applied as the throttle begins to open. Lower settings are useful when available traction is limited, while higher settings can produce a stronger initial response on high-grip surfaces.

Important 5S LiPo Setting

The MAX8 G2S supports 3S, 4S, 5S and 6S LiPo. Automatic cell recognition does not identify 5S, so the correct battery cell count should be manually set to 5S when using that configuration.

Although 2S appears in the shared programming table, the manual specifically states that 2S is not supported by this ESC.

Protection Functions

  • LiPo low-voltage protection
  • ESC overheat protection
  • Motor overheat protection with supported Hobbywing sensored motors
  • Throttle-signal loss protection
  • Current protection
  • Capacitor overheat protection

Motor overheat protection is motor-dependent. For the MAX8 G2S, this function requires a supported Hobbywing motor capable of supplying the required temperature information, such as compatible EZRUN 4268SD / 4278SD G2 or G2R motors.

Motor Selection for 4S and 6S

Hobbywing provides the following conventional motor references:

  • 4S LiPo: KV ≤3000
  • 6S LiPo: KV ≤2400 with a 4278-size motor

These values are not a substitute for checking the complete setup. Also consider:

  • Motor voltage and maximum RPM rating
  • Motor size and thermal capacity
  • Pinion and spur gearing
  • Final-drive ratio
  • Tire diameter
  • Vehicle weight
  • Driving surface and traction
  • Turbo Timing
  • Battery discharge capability
  • ESC and motor temperature

XT90 Input and 6.5mm Motor Connections

The MAX8 G2S uses a pre-installed XT90 battery connector with 10AWG input wiring. Motor-side output uses 6.5mm female gold connectors.

Before connecting the battery, always verify correct polarity. Reversed battery polarity can immediately damage the ESC.

Throttle Calibration

Calibrate the throttle range when installing the MAX8 G2S for the first time, after replacing the transmitter, or whenever throttle trim, EPA or other relevant transmitter settings are changed.

Because a 1/8 brushless system can produce substantial torque, keep the driven wheels clear of the ground during calibration or remove the motor pinion when practical.
