The Hobbywing QUICRUN WP 16BL30 G2 is a compact 30A waterproof brushless ESC developed for 1/16 and 1/18 scale RC cars. It supports 2S and 3S LiPo power and is suitable for on-road cars, off-road vehicles, buggies, short course trucks and mini monster trucks.

Compared with the previous QUICRUN WP-16BL30, the G2 version combines a smaller housing, intelligent freewheeling technology and an upgraded selectable 6V/7.4V BEC. The result is a cleaner installation, improved partial-throttle efficiency and stronger support for compatible steering servos.

This is a sensorless brushless ESC. It can operate a sensored brushless motor, but the motor will work in sensorless mode because the ESC does not use a motor sensor cable. It is not compatible with brushed motors.

Intelligent Freewheeling for Better Efficiency

The QUICRUN WP 16BL30 G2 uses Hobbywing intelligent freewheeling technology to improve drive efficiency during partial-throttle operation. This is especially useful in smaller RC vehicles that have limited airflow and little room for a large cooling system.

By reducing unnecessary electrical loss under suitable operating conditions, the ESC can run at a lower temperature, maintain more consistent output and place less thermal stress on the power system. Actual temperature still depends on motor KV, gearing, vehicle weight, tire size, ambient temperature and driving style.

Smaller G2 Design for Compact Chassis

Installation space is often one of the biggest problems when upgrading a 1/16 or 1/18 RC car. The G2 version has been redesigned to take up less room than the previous WP 16BL30.

Dimension Previous WP 16BL30 WP 16BL30 G2 Reduction
Length 36mm 33.4mm 8.3% shorter
Width 28mm 26.8mm 7.1% narrower
Height 18mm 15.1mm 16.7% lower

The lower profile helps with body clearance, while the reduced footprint leaves more room for the receiver, wiring and battery leads. This can be especially useful in mini monster trucks, compact buggies and conversion projects where the original electronics tray was designed around a smaller brushed system.

Upgraded 6V and 7.4V BEC

The internal BEC provides 2A continuous current with up to 4A peak output. Its voltage can be switched between 6V and 7.4V, allowing the ESC to work with both conventional steering electronics and compatible high-voltage servos.

6V BEC Setting

Use for standard-voltage receivers and steering servos that are not rated for direct 7.4V operation.

7.4V BEC Setting

Use only with receivers, servos and accessories specifically rated for high-voltage operation.

Important: selecting a BEC voltage above the rated operating voltage of the receiver or servo can permanently damage the electronics. Check every receiver-powered component before changing the BEC from 6V to 7.4V.

IP67-Rated Protection for Outdoor RC Driving

The sealed ESC design provides IP67-rated protection under normal operating conditions. It is designed to handle common RC environments involving splashes, rain, dust, sand and mud more reliably than an exposed non-waterproof speed controller.

IP67 does not mean the ESC should remain underwater. Do not intentionally submerge it for extended periods. After wet use, disconnect the battery, clean away dirt and allow the vehicle and electronics to dry fully before storage.

Water resistance is not permanent. Impact damage, worn seals, damaged wires, incorrect installation and normal aging can reduce protection over time.

Motor and Battery Selection

The ESC supports both 2S and 3S LiPo setups, but the same motor should not automatically be used on both voltages. A higher battery voltage requires a lower motor KV or a lighter overall load.

Battery Recommended Motor Limit Typical Direction Important Check
2S LiPo KV ≤ 8000 Responsive general-purpose mini RC setup Monitor gearing, tire size and motor temperature.
3S LiPo KV ≤ 4500 Higher-speed setup using a suitable 20XX or 24XX motor The motor must be specifically rated for 3S operation.
6-9 Cell NiMH Selected according to actual pack voltage Replacement or upgrade for vehicles retaining NiMH power Disable LiPo cutoff when required for the NiMH setup.

The WP 16BL30 G2 is designed to work well with suitable Hobbywing QUICRUN 2030 and 2435-size brushless motors. The QUICRUN 2435 G2 is a direct system partner for many 1/16 and 1/18 applications, provided the selected KV, battery voltage and gearing remain within the recommended limits.

A motor being physically small enough does not guarantee that the power system is safe. Excessive gearing, oversized tires, drivetrain resistance or a heavy vehicle can still cause overheating even when the motor KV appears to be within range.

Designed for 1/16 and 1/18 RC Vehicles

The QUICRUN WP 16BL30 G2 is suitable for a broad range of mini RC platforms, including:

  • 1/16 on-road RC cars
  • 1/16 off-road buggies
  • 1/16 short course trucks
  • 1/16 mini monster trucks
  • 1/18 on-road RC cars
  • 1/18 off-road cars and trucks
  • Compact brushed-to-brushless conversion projects

The small housing and fanless design are useful where body clearance is limited. However, the ESC should still be mounted where air can move around the heat sink, and the wiring should be secured away from gears, driveshafts and suspension components.

Straightforward Installation and Good System Value

The WP 16BL30 G2 offers a practical upgrade route for owners who want a modern brushless system without moving to a physically large competition ESC. The XT60 battery connector and pre-installed 3.5mm motor connectors can reduce the amount of soldering required when the battery and motor already use matching plugs.

Its compact dimensions also leave more space for clean wire routing. This is important in mini RC chassis, where poorly positioned power wires can interfere with suspension travel, steering movement or rotating drivetrain parts.

Three Current Programming Methods

The ESC supports three practical programming methods:

ESC SET Button

Useful for calibration, factory reset and parameter changes without purchasing a separate program box.

LED Program Box

Provides a faster way to view and change common ESC settings at the workbench.

LCD Program Box Pro

Offers a more detailed display for selecting and reviewing compatible parameters.

When using the LED Program Box, the WP 16BL30 G2 uses the throttle cable together with the separate yellow signal wire. Follow the connection diagram in the manual before powering the ESC.

The ESC does not support OTA programming, WiFi Express programming, real-time data logging, historical data curves or online firmware upgrades.

Adjustable ESC Parameters

The following settings can be adjusted to suit different vehicles, surfaces and driving preferences:

  • Running mode
  • Low-voltage cutoff
  • Punch level
  • Drag brake force
  • Maximum brake force
  • Maximum reverse force
  • Neutral range
  • Motor timing
  • LiPo cell count
  • BEC output voltage

Available Running Modes

Mode Operation Typical Use
Forward with Brake Forward and proportional brake only Racing or applications where reverse is not wanted
Forward/Reverse with Brake Brake is applied before reverse engages General bashing and everyday RC driving
Forward with Reverse Reverse responds directly when commanded Special vehicle setups requiring direct reverse response

Throttle Calibration and Protection

Throttle range calibration should be completed before the first use of the ESC and whenever the transmitter or receiver is replaced. The calibration process stores the neutral, full-throttle and full-brake positions.

The ESC uses its LEDs to indicate operating and protection states:

  • A flashing red LED indicates low-voltage protection.
  • A single repeating green flash indicates ESC overheat protection.
  • Three repeating green flashes indicate overcurrent protection.

If protection is triggered, do not continue driving without checking the cause. Battery voltage, motor load, gearing, drivetrain resistance and operating temperature should all be inspected before the vehicle is used again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Hobbywing QUICRUN WP 16BL30 G2 run on 3S?

Yes. It supports 2S and 3S LiPo batteries. For 3S operation, Hobbywing recommends a suitable motor no higher than 4500KV, normally in the 20XX or 24XX size range. The motor must also be rated for 3S.

Can I use an 8000KV motor on 3S?

No. The 8000KV recommendation applies to 2S operation. For 3S, the recommended maximum is 4500KV. Using an excessively high-KV motor on 3S can overload the motor, ESC and battery.

Can the WP 16BL30 G2 run a sensored motor?

A sensored brushless motor may be connected, but it will operate in sensorless mode. The ESC does not have a motor sensor input.

Is this ESC compatible with a brushed motor?

No. The QUICRUN WP 16BL30 G2 is a brushless ESC and cannot control a brushed motor.

Should I use the 6V or 7.4V BEC setting?

Use 6V for conventional receivers and standard-voltage servos. Select 7.4V only when the receiver, steering servo and every connected receiver-powered accessory are rated for high-voltage use.

Does IP67 mean the ESC is completely waterproof forever?

No. IP67 provides protection under normal test and use conditions, but the ESC should not remain submerged. Water resistance may decrease because of wear, impact damage, damaged wiring or aging seals.

Do I need a separate program box?

No. Basic calibration and parameter changes can be completed with the ESC SET button. The LED Program Box or LCD Program Box Pro provides a faster and more convenient setup method.
